Quality Improvement Organization

Acronym: QIO

Formerly known as Peer Review Organizations (PROs), QIOs monitor the quality of care provided to Medicare beneficiaries to ensure that healthcare services are medically necessary, appropriate, provided in a proper setting, and are of acceptable quality. QIOs are comprised of practicing doctors and other health care experts paid by the federal government to check and improve the care given to people with Medicare.
