Preferred Provider Organization

Acronym: PPO

A type of individual or employer-sponsored health plan benefit in which members are not required to select a primary care provider. PPOs generally allow members to choose any health professional without a referral, both within and outside the designated provider network. Enrollees who choose in-network providers typically pay less than if they choose a provider who is not a member of the network.
