Medicare Administrative Contractor

Acronym: MAC

A Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) is a private entity that CMS contracts with under section 1874A of the Social Security Act, as added by the Medicare Prescription Drug Improvement and Modernization Act (MMA) of 2003. The MACs handle Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B claims processing and related services under the MMA, and Durable Medical Equipment (DME) MACs handle Medicare claims for DME.
