Clearinghouse

Are a type of trading partner that take in non-HIPAA compliant transactions, convert them to compliant transactions, and forward them to the receiver. Clearinghouses also operate in reverse by taking in HIPAA-compliant transactions, converting them to proprietary formats, and forwarding them to the receiver, per the receiver’s specifications. Clearinghouses can be trading partners of providers, payers, or other clearinghouses. Transactions will flow through the clearinghouse based on the party to which it is acting on behalf.
